Congrats and welcome...the 97 SET is one of the best of the NG900s...the only factory improvement would be if you had the 98's hydraulic clutch since you have a manual.

Could anything be seriously wrong with it? Possibly, depending on the previous owner's maintenance/care. What to do? Yes, have a good Saab mechanic check it out, change to synthetic oil, and follow the maintenance schedule carefully. Preventative maintenance is invaluable on these cars. Properly maintained it will be very reliable. Mods? There are many possibilities, but I would recommned driving it stock for at least a little while to see if you even really want to change it. I personally like stock on my 97 900 SET Auto.

It may be possible to locate the maintenance records, but it could require a lot of time and patience--here are a few things to try--of course some of these are long shots, but could be worth a shot.

-Ask the dealer you bought it from where they bought it from? Maybe a shop/dealer who you can call and see if they have paperwork/computer files? Although, if it was a private individual, they technically shouldn't tell you.
-Call Saab USA customer service and give them the VIN, they may be able to tell you at least the dealer it was purchased at, if not other delaerships where it was serviced, and if nothing else, they can at least give you any recall info if applicable.
-Very long shot: you said you have the carfax, the carfax tells you when the car was registered to a new owner and I think where (right?)...if it does say where, look up the Saab dealers in that city/region and call them with the VIN...they may have serviced your car

I spent more time than I wanted to digging up the records on my car, but it was worth in the end, especially because I was very pleasantly surprised to find many of the potentially expensive repairs had been recently taken care of by the previous owner.
