From an earlier post, I believe I was able to determine that I have a very very slow coolant leak around the head gasket. The outside of the engine block is very dirty with coolant/dirt, and right around the water pump there is even some of it that is not dirty ("fresh"). The oil pan has some on it, as does the oil filter. I also noticed a slight buildup of greyish sludge on my oil dipstick. I have not noticed any "drips" in the driveway.
The info out there says that there was a TSB (which I got thanks to this bulletin board) that details re-torquing the cylinder head bolts. This doesn't sound too difficult, but I want some more advice. I have 125K, and I am afraid opening things up may just create more problems than it solves. They probably need tightening down, but could this not properly be done with out replacing the head gasket at this point? I am not too excited about pulling the entire engine just to address this problem at this point.
Again, the coolant leak right now is very slow. In fact, I have owned the car for 6 months (new to Saab! and love it), and have not even seen the level in the expansion tank move. Here is the question. Should I try a simple solution and add some "Bar's Leak". I have seen fairly good reports on this from this bulletin board. I could run it like this for a couple of months, then, when I flush the system this coming spring, clean it out good and put in good antifreeze. Also, on the "oil" side, I tried M1 synthetic for the last 4K, but now am going to switch back to Valvoline Max Life (again, seal conditioner) for a few changes to help seal things up before returning to synthetic. Again, I got this from the board, but am open for suggestions.
Advice?
