Differences:

Turbo is lower compression, has piston cooling oil jets. There is a larger capacity oil pump to deal with the added flows of the piston cooling jets and the turbo bearings. The turbo has a thermstatically controled oil cooler.

2.3 NA has 10.5 compression ratio. Some markets may have the oil cooler.

Otherwise the engines are not much different. Same bore, the 2.3L engine has a longer stroke.

So is the 2.3L engine responsible for the sluding?... or are turbo owners very concerned about what oil they use? I expect the problem is the oil being used by folks with the NA engines. And perhaps sometimes the oil changes are neglected as well. The higher compression ratio might generate some higher levels of NOX in the blowby gases. That would increase oil oxidization a bit.

I think that the 2.3L engine would do fine on a true synthetic. So that leaves on with Mobil 1 0W40. Older engines will run better on a xW40.

No the 9-5 owners are not having these problems. And again almost the same engine. The 9-5 engine is like the 2.0L turbo, just has the longer throw crankshaft.

Make sure you low oil pressure switch works. These fail! Ignition on, engine not running. You should see the oil can symbol. If not, get a new switch!

Adding a turbo to a NA engine would need the piston cooling jets and higher cap oil pump, perhaps an oil cooler and its t-stat get, new exhaust manifold, turbo, downpipe/cat, intercooler, ducts, BPC or MBC, BPV and return pipe, turbo intake, hose and air box top, MAP sensor, perhaps a new throttle body and TBTC, and a trionic ECU, wiring harness and DI cassette. And the 10.5 compression ratio would knock like crazy on boost. Its quite insane! Better to purchase a Saab with a turbo.

More and more engines are going synthetic. More and more drivers have done so. Use the best oil. Mobil 1 is a true synthetic. Group III oils such as Castrol FakeTec(tm) are better than plain dyno. You can get a gallon of Rotella 5W40 synthetic at Walmart for around $13US. Its a group III, and has an addative package to stand up to Diesel engine service. It has the standards for galoline engines as well.
