Even though it may conjure up visions of Thirties' motoring, with those weird flying helmets and goggles etc., definitely leave a space for that blanket, or at least a very warm coat. Anyone who's had the misfortune of getting stranded on a snowy night will tell you how they kicked themselves for not bothering to throw in a few basic items. It's true that many of us get lulled into a false sense of security by driving modern cars which have so much equipment that you can't imagine anything mechanical let alone meteorological could ever stop them. So I would add to the things already mentioned a box of matches or cigarette lighter and a piece of rope. Then at least someone can pull you out if need be.
Having said all that, you'll be driving one of the best vehicles for the occasion, so don't let all these disaster/survival tips put you off! I live in the Alps and got caught out a few days ago by some early snow, driving on a set of very worn summer tires. Although I've had plenty of experience driving on snow, this was the first time I had done it in my Saab, and the first time with an automatic gearbox. NO problem, and the winter setting on the auto box works remarkably well. I was helped by having fairly narrow tires (185), and if you have wide tires (205+) your traction will be considerably reduced - think about investing in a set of snow chains if you expect to see a lot of snow. They don't cost much these days.
The golden rule, as mentioned by others, is do everthing gently. You'll soon get a feel for how the car behaves, and the sensation of balancing a ton of metal on your fingertips is kinda fun!
Oh, and drive confidently - getting through demands a certain amount of attack, if you get my meaning. Ever watched those Scandinavian rally drivers of the 70s?
Good luck.
Andy
