I was sitting at a light tonight and all of a sudden smelled an electrical ozone type smell, and noticed my alternator light was on and all my instruments were dim, so I turned around and managed to get back to my college. I'm guessing the alternator died, so my questions are: how much will it be to get it fixed? What can I do to minimize the amount it costs? How long will it take to be fixed? About how far can I drive it before it totally dies (with the DRL fuse pulled)? I was only about a mile away from school, so the batter is still partially charged. Should I hook it up with jumper cables to someone else's car and charge it before I set out to the mechanic? I'm just worried because I have to drive back to NJ from Boston at the end of next week and I don't have much cash! Thanks in advance for your help!
