I got all the torx out and it was stuck solid. I tried finding a lip and tapping slightly with a screwdriver, but it was solid (esp. around the timing end). In desperation (with a fairly level head, I hope), I placed a pry bar between the inner cavity (where the spark plugs go) and found a little lip and pried slightly (using one side as a pivot point I could actually leverage it against itself). Anyway, POP and it came off. Luckily I caught it before it took a tumble.
The reason it was so stuck: Black sooty gritty buildup on the cover and the walls around the timing chain! I will post more about this later, but it has me a bit worried. 2.3 N/A that has probably had dino oil until I bought it 4K ago.
Is your's also the 2.3? A friend w/ a 1989 2.0 N/A said his cover came right off with much less effort. There are rumors on this board about what happens to 2.3's, but this may be a start to bigger problems later. Any other experiences like this out there?
