Burning smell...(long, sorry)...

A few weeks back, my 1996 900S 2.3 began to smell bad after driving. The burning smell became so severe that I ran it to an Indy and he told me it was the belt. I had done a short belt mod on the car approx 9 mos. ago so I figured my DIY job had ran its course and it was time to fix the prblem. Upon reviewing the engine, and some heated discussions, I have since found my old engine (80K miles) to be no good (broken timing chain guides?) and have had a new used eng put in (Fidelity Warranty). They also replaced the tension pulley and the belt. The same burning smell is back (I imagine it never left). I do not believe the smell is from excess fluids, oils, lubes or anything like that because the smell is so distinct and exactly like the burning smell I found before all the work. Any thoughts? What could the smell be from if not from the engine or pulleys?

P.S. It appears the smell may get worse the harder I drive the car.
