Well, cold is a relative term. A really cold day here in L.A. is 40F and mine creaks like that summer and "winter." Although I refer to it as a squinching sound, going over speed bumps at low speed, sometimes it is more of a creaking sound. Not all the time, though, maybe 60/40. Some days it is a quiet as my wife's 2002 9-5. Well, almost.

About 18 months ago, I had the struts replaced with Konis and the lower control arms for newer ones with polyurethane bushings - no change in the sound. Last time I had it in the shop, a month ago, Anders ("Swedecar") spent some time with the front suspension taken apart, but of course that day the sound wasn't there for him to hear on our test drive. He pulled the struts and replace the failing ring-shaped bearings at the top, rotated the springs in their seats, and generally tightened up the suspension and steering bits - which improved handling and eliminated the knuckle-cracking sound I was hearing now and then - but didn't affect the squinching/creaking sound. Next time I take it in, he can continue his quest, but if Anders can't find it, at some point I think I will just assume it is a ghost, give it a name, and live with it. An 8-yr old car has to have a few quirks besides the ignition key between the seats....

A number of us have this noise, so if you stumble onto a fix - let us all know.
