The model year (MY) 1997 & 1998 Saab 900 benefited from a long list of running changes and model improvements over the course of the NG900 life; including improved front suspension (MY1995), improved shift linkage (MY1997), etc.
In particular the 1997 & 1998 Saab 900 had larger brakes, and the 1998 model changed to a hydraulic clutch (instead of cable activated) along with added reinforcement of the side impact door beams and B-pillars.
The 2.0 liter turbo engine has proven to be very reliable and easy to upgrade for additional horsepower. The 2.3 liter normally aspirated engine has suffered from some oil slug problems and premature balanced shaft chain wear balance, possibly related to neglected oil changes.
The manual and automatic gearboxes have equally good reliability ratings.
