Oil selection for a leak

Hi,
I have a 94 900S 2.3l 4cyl with ~115,000 miles on her. I bought the car used in 2001 with 85,000 mi from a SAAB mechanic in New Hampshire, I soon thereafter moved to California. The NH mechanic replaced the timing chain before I bought it. For the first year, there were no leaks, but then I started noticing a small puddle of oil under the car. When I told my new mechanic about the leak and also mentioned the replacement of the T.C. he said "Ah, yup, they'll do that" and gave me back the keys. I assumed that meant I shouldn't spend a lot of money to fix the small leak...
The problem hasn't been getting worse, but I'm tired of the mess. I'm now wondering if I can switch to a thicker grade oil to reduce the leaking. If so, How thick can I go? Should I switch to Synthetic?
I live in Encinitas, CA (just north of San Diego) and the temp ranges from 45-85F, but usually about 70F.
Thanks for your help,
-Greg
