A story of coolant, helpful parts guys, and Uncle Sam:
After driving from Milwaukee to Coshocton Ohio (abt 1.5 hrs E of Columbus, and 1.5 hrs S of Cleveland) for Christmas, I was on my way from Coshocton to St. Louis for New Years. Got to about Indianapolis, when the low coolant light came on. Antifreeze all over the engine bay.
Closer inspection revealed that one of the hoses to the heater core had sprung a leak. After stopping another 30 mi down the road to top off again, I Duct Taped it up, topped off the coolant, and it held the remaining 280 miles to St. Louis.
On Jan 1, I called around to several parts stores and dealerships, leaving a message at Mid-America Saab on the NW side of SL. Parts manager Gaylon Mitchell called me back at 8:30am on Friday morn, told me he had the parts in stock. The fiance drove me up to get 'em, Gaylon already had them pulled and waiting. It was a pleasure to deal with him. While I was there, I also picked up a Y fitting for the PCV valve, which I had snapped off.
Then, I used our tax-payer dollars, and went to Scott AFB with my active duty girlfriend, taking advantage of their hobby-shop garage to replace the hoses, top the antifreeze, etc. Cost $5.50 for 2 hours of garage space, antifreeze disposal, and all the tools I needed. Rock on Uncle Sam!
So, from my experience, the parts dep at Mid America is great to deal with, and, if you have a high mileage car, I would highly recommend Preventative replacement of all coolant hoses. For convenience and financial savings - the $50 heater core hose set from Saab was only $16.95 from Eeuroparts!
