Under the hood, behind the transmission bell housing (manual trans), there is a somewhat flat surface, square in shape, which seems like it might be a part of the transmission assembly. On the top of this flat surface (which sits directly behind the transmmission bell housing, so below and behind the motor itself) is a hole or plug, and there's oil and gunk in the hole and sitting on the flat surface around the hole. When I put my finger in it, the fluid looked very much like clean engine oil.
Could it possibly be manual transmission fluid (I've got the '97+ synthetic trans fluid in the car)? Or perhaps just accumulated leaked oil. There's quite a bit of that light colored fluid when I stick my finger in that hole, probably 1-2 tablespoons. If it's the transmission oil filler, shouldn't there be a plug or screw in the hole?
