Thoughts on the TOD drive – normally around the end of September we make a trip to the outer banks and stay near Kitty Hawk. Couple of years ago that trip was washed out by the storm; we changed plans and went to Asheville. Fast drive to Ashville from DC metro area is about 8 hours, however we went down to Roanoke and picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway and took it into Asheville. Speed is limited, but road was empty and only needed to pass once in over 250 miles. Asheville is worth the trip with lots of tourist type sights, and also some good restaurants. Think TOD would be about 2 hours on past Asheville. On the way home we again took BRP north into the Skyline Drive and back to Front Royal. Almost need 4 days plus to make trip worthwhile.
For a day drive near home we do the George Washington Trail, or parts of it – total loop drive is about 136 miles. Parts of the drive from Berkeley Springs to Paw Paw look like the TOD. If you are not in a rush, take time for a roman bath at the park in the center of Berkeley Springs. See links below for more information.
