oxygen/knock sensor is the spark plug itself. Between firings, the plug is hit with a small charge to check resistance across the electrode gap. This measures the level of burned vs. unburned fuel. What I suspect is happening is that the Ethanol mix changes the resistance relative to the amount of unburned fuel after the power stroke. The Trionic ECU is probably looking for a specific petrol-based value, and ethanol changes that value.
Result is it runs fine, but the values are "wrong" and the CEL comes on.
Purely my guesswork. Take it to the dealer and get it checked of course. I'd be curious to hear what they say.
Given the trend in fuels -- ethanol mix, etc., plus the fact that Saab just came out with a Bio-Power 9-5 (selling already in Europe, scheduled for release in the US this fall) I would hope that it would be a software update (patch if you will?) to reset or broaden the expected values.
Again, my supposition, but we can hope anyway.
Good luck and let us all know what happens.
Jim Miller, WASSAAB
