I am talking about real scratches. The PO had a bike rack on
the hatch and there are a few scratches from it and the bike.
Some of these scratches are down to the primer. I have never
understood why Saab uses white primer on a black car.
In the past I have acually filled the scrathes with a 3m scratch
filler paste. I then sand it down and feather the edges of paint
and then spray it with a spray-can of touch-up paint. I then lightly
sand to get it smooth. After some rubbing compound and polishing
compound I finish off with wax.
There are also swirl marks to deal with, but Maguire's 3-step will take care
of those with sufficient rubbing.
I tried your suggestion of using polishing compound to test. It does not have a clear coat.
My experience with clear-coat was on a Mazda I had that was a metallic beige. I tried to use sandpaper
to take out a scratch and ended up going through the clear-coat with very little rubbing.
Maybe the Mazda had a real thin clear coat.
I also have a silver Aero, but I have never had to deal with any scratches on that one, other
than some swirl marks and some minor scratches that a clear-coat safe rubbing compound
removed easily.
%Thanks again,
jj
