Cleaning an engine with a oily alternator...... how?

This weekend I want to clean my mom's 1989 9000 2.0 engine. In such instances I usually cover up the alternator. However, as most of us Saabers know the 2.0 liter 9000 engine can be notorous for getting the alternator oil soaked. This is the case with my mom's engine. Can I put engine shampoo over the engine as well as the alternator and and simply rinse it off. If so, should I let the alternator sit 12-24 hours to dry out? Or, do I clean the engine and exposed alternator while the car is running? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
