Its important to be clear about buffers and polishers. There are 3 kinds of tools available to detail cars:
1. Orbital buffers - These are found at auto parts stores and places like Sears and WalMart and sell for under $100. They spin in an orbital pattern which eliminates the possibility of inducing swirl marks or serious damage to your paint. But they do not have the power and torque of a real pro quality tool. They're best used to apply cleaner waxes and are fine for the casual, undemanding car owner.
2. Rotary polishers - These are the tools of choice for pro detailers and body shops. The polishing head spins in a circle, not an orbit, and it operates at high speeds. This tool can do wonders for paint jobs but can also do permanent damage if used carelessly. Not the tool for the amateur or novice but if you're serious about detailing and want a serious tool, this is the one.
3. Random orbital polishers - Basically a combo of the two above. Polishing head spins in an orbital pattern but does so at a higher speed and with greater torque. This is the tool of choice for the serious enthusiast who does not want/need a rotary. The best polisher on the market is made by Porter Cable and goes under a couple different model numbers depending on what comes in the box. Look for model # 7424 or 7336. Cost is about $120. Best place to get this polisher is at Coastal Tool.com as they offer a "Porter Cable bonus kit" which comes with two counterweights and a velcro backing plate. This machine is very easy to use, safe, effective, and with the right pads and polishes can do about 90% of what a rotary polisher can do.
A few threads down I posted a link for a tutorial on the Porter Cable 7424. Please look for it and read the link. You'll learn a lot about how to use this machine properly.
