For what it's worth - I don't believe the 1996 seats were coated, because my front two seats in my 96 900se convertible look like crap, and the passenger one has cracked. The back ones, ironically, look awesome. Go figure. I share the same hot summers you do, as I live in Dallas. I posted a question about recovering vs. replacing on another BB and got the following great response. Haven't tried any leads yet, but am sharing in case it helps others

Scott,
You don't necessarily have to replace the seats, there are places that can recondition them for a fraction of the price. Keep the difference for other goodies :)
Couple of websites to look at:
http://www.leathermagic.com
http://www.leatherique.com
http://www.leathermedic.com
http://www.colorplus.com
Also check out some postings on the saabnet.com website:
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/NG900/index.html?blD=92168
and while you're there, click on the 'Detail' bb and do a search with 'leather'.
