I have "four" cats so I know your problem(well kinda , they are indoor only). When a cat is going ,or scratching, or into/onto something you need to use tin foil to train them.
This might be a pain, but you only have to do this for a little while. you might take sheets a foil tape them together to create a sheet (big enough for the top) and place the sheet over your top each night or day depending when he visits the top . They hate the feel of foil/sound, so they will ignore this spot/space . The reason and plan behind this is, that when you do this cats tend , and will forget that space in do time, and move on, after about a month or so(maybe less) you can throw the foil(or in my case resycle) away. I bet the cat wont return to this area again. TRUST ME it`s in all the cat books and has saved my THIRD set of furniture( they devoured all my past furniture)
So give it a try and I`m sure you will be surprized!! I hope the post is understandable..:)
