Having lived in apartments and other places which did not allow car washing, my only choice was to use the coin op washes. As long as you only use their rinse and stay away from the soap and brushes, you'll be fine. Most coin op joints use filtered and/or recycled water and many also have deionizing systems built in so they're plenty safe for car washing. However the soaps are bought in bulk (30 or 55 gal drums) usually from whoever is the cheapest so you cannot count on their performance.
I just brought my normal buckets, shampoos, mitts, etc and washed as I would if I had a driveway at home. MisplacedYankee's technique is the same one I used for about 10 years. The high pressure spray makes cleaning wheels, wheelwells, engines, etc super easy.
Just remember to bring your own quarters (the change machines cannot be relied on) and wash at off times when people don't have to wait for you to finish. Its a good idea to get to know the wash owner/operator if you become a regular customer. Many operators do not like "bucket washers" since we take our time and don't spend as much money. But if you talk to them I think you'll find most are cool with it.
