Use the stiffer pads for polishing/defect removal/swirl removal, etc. Softer pads are made for gentler tasks like glaze or wax application.
I'd suggest buying a Meguiar's yellow polishing pad if you can find it locally (check out auto paint & body supply stores or small independent auto parts stores). Use that with the Step 1 polish. Follow up with the white pad and the Step 2 glaze, then either hand apply or use the black pad for the Step 3 wax.
Don't be afraid to crank up the speed - I use mine on 6 almost all the time except for applying mild polishes or liquid wax.
Let us know how things work out for you. Good luck.
