My 2 Cents on Peanut Oil

I've read a lot of the back and forth here on the famous Mothers Back-To-Black vs. Peanut Oil vs. GR-40 debate, and thought I'd weigh in with my recent experience.
I had always used Mothers and was never satisfied with it. Though I was still intending to order GR-40 on-line eventually, and I was very skeptical about using cooking products on a car, I figured I'd try the Peanut Oil one time. I gotta tell ya, the stuff works. A week later (during which it rained in NY for most of the time) and the black trim is far blacker and cleaner than it ever was after using Mothers followed by heavy rain. I will definitely use the stuff again, and will hold off oredring the GR-40 for now.
Can anyone explain how the Peanut Oil works? I always assumed it gave a shine to the trim the same way anything would shine if you poured oil on it, but then it would eventually wipe away. There seems to be more to it than that though. Does the oil penetrate the rubber and invigorate it somehow? And if so, how in the world does it work on plastic like the sideview mirrors?
