A real good question

I'd like to pick your brains. My 99 se is parked outside under a car cover (Budge brand). It has several coats of Megiuers NXT wax.
After a pretty good three day rain storm I took off the cover and the car was coated with very fine grey powder--a lot of it! The powder was fine, and most of it came off with a car duster. But some areas were really coated a lot--like the hood and top of the trunk--the same areas that I have the most coats of the NXT on...The grey powder was mostly on the painted parts but it was also where there wasn't any wax (NXT) applied (the soft top and glass). It was a mess. Worse than if I left it uncovered.
This was the first decent rain storm that I had the cover on the car and have two theories: 1. The NXT wax "steamed" up and turned into this dust. 2. The dust was in the top and with the 4 inches of rain we got it washed thru onto the car.
What do you think?
I never thought a wax (especially one that is "advanced" like NXT) would ever leave the paint in this fashion.
Anyone seen this or know what to do to prevent this?
Sorry, the garage is full so the car isn't going there--nice try ;)
