Well, there is polishing and "polishing". Some wheels are made of forged aluminum alloy and look like they are chrome plated but are actually polished to a mirror-like finish. Wheels like this need regular polishing to maintain their looks.
But most factory alloy wheels are painted silver and topped with a durable clearcoat. With these wheels, "polishing" is simply using a paint polish to remove road grime and restore gloss, then protecting them with a wax or sealant. IOW, they care for their wheels just like the paint.
If you have a favorite car wax you're using on the paint, feel free to use it on the wheels too. They can use all the protection they can get.
As for slinging tire protectants, here's a couple tips:
1. Apply the dressing with a clean sponge or, even better, an Eagle One Tire Swipe (avail at Walmart and every auto parts store) instead of just spraying the product directly onto the tires. This will limit excess product.
2. If you're using one of those tire shine products (they're usually clear and feel oily and slippery), consider switching to a water-based dressing. Water-based dressings are milky white in color and while not as shiny-looking, they're safer for tires and plastics long term. The original version of Armor All is water based as are most of the better dressings (303 Aerospace, Zaino Z16, Mothers Preserves, etc). Let it setup as long as you can and/or go over the tire with the swipe.
