Cleaning the headliner?

My headliner is still in near-perfect condition but has gotten dirty around the edges of the sunroof. I suspect a little moisture issue from frequent washing and perhaps dust collection from air leaks at the sunroof. At any rate, my upholstery guy once warned me not to try to clean the headliner with anything. He said no matter what I used, it would cause the fabric to sag. There must be a way???
