First time with clay - wow!

Tried clay for the first time on my white 1990 900 turbo convertible. There were little specs of steel embedded on the hood that were beginning to rust. I think it was some kind of industrial fallout. I figured that clay was the best way to remove these.
Here was my process:
1) Wash with Armour All car wash
2) Clay with Mothers clay bar kit
3) Polish with Mothers phase 1 pre wax cleaner
4) Seal with Mothers phase 2 sealer/glaze
5) Wax with Mothers pure carnuba
2-5 were done a section a a time.
The clay bar is a little tricky at first. Too much lubricant and the bar just slides around, too little and it sticks. But when you get the lubricant level just right, it's amazing. It pulls the dirt and particles off. In my case, I had to go over the top surfaces many times, at least four times over the whole hood, and then certain sections as many as ten. But if you keep at it, each of those little specs of dirt/metal/rust come off. The clay bar will also pull some paint oxidation off. Not as much as phase 1 does, but some. This got me thinking about doing phase 1 before clay, but I think that may have grinded in those particles embedded in the paint and made things worse.
The hood alone took me an afternoon. The trunk lid and passenger side another afternoon. The driver's side, which was in worse shape than the passenger side, a third afternoon.
Needless to say, the car looks as good as it ever has. And if metal falls out of the sky again, I've got a nice carnuba coat to protect things.
