Good old Gunk brand Foamy Engine Brite works great. Use it twice if you need to. If it's hopelessly dirty (more than 1/8 in or 3mm deep), you might want to spend a few bucks to have it professionally steam cleaned to save yourself some frustration. A few tips:
* Check your manual and cover up anything that needs to be covered. On the '04 9-3, you need to cover the headlights (I do these by hand).
* Some engine cleaners will goof up the stickers in the front of the engine compartment. Do these by hand too.
* This is probably obvious, but don't spray the hose directly into the engine air intake.
* After you spray it off, take it for a drive and get it good and warm, then park it with the hood open for 30 min to get rid of any water that might creep into the wrong place.
BTW, Simple Green also works great – spray it on, wait 15 minutes, and the magic happens!
