Bad experience with Black Magic.....

I bought a bottle of Black Magic wax about a year ago and used it. I got a weird smugging/swirling pattern on the paint when I did it and I thought it must have meant I did not allow the car to dry thoroughly enough.

Yesterday I set you to do it all properly with both my 9-2x and the gf 90 spg.

Washed the cars twice and dried then thoroughly
Used Mother PreWax cleaner, then Mothers sealant/glaze

After step two both cars looked very good and I applied the black magic finish wax for step 3. The end result was more of the swirl/smug look.

I ended up not doing step 3 on the gf's car because it looked much better with out it.

Is it possible that the wax is bad bottle? Do I need only use the mother's step 3 wax after using the rest of their products?

Also do I still need to do a finish wax on the gf's car? or is it okay with the step 2 layer? Additionally it seemed like a lot of paint was coming off her car onto the clothes, is that pretty much normal for a 16 yr old saab?
