crap hitting it over the years, so it might be that.
do you really notice it if you're driving into the sun? when you run your fingernail across the glass, can you feel it catching on bumps? you could take a single edge razor blade and run it across the glass, if they're actual bumps that would scrape them and you'd have a better idea of what you're facing.
if you have comprehensive insurance on your car (in cali at least), and the w/s is pitted, they will replace it as a safety item so that may be an option. if you do replace it and pay for it yourself, most glass shops will give you a break from the quoted rate if you pay cash and pay yourself instead of insurance.
