When it is cold out, I wind up hooking up the garden hose to the laundry room sink and running it out through the garage, so I can wash (and rinse) the car using warm water. The warm water not only helps wash off the dirt, but it also keeps my hands (inside rubber gloves) warm.
If you don't have access to a warm water faucet at home, the alternative is to fill a few one gallon containers with warm water, and then go to a local self service car wash. I then empty the warm water into a bucket with detergent and proceed to wash the cars. Then use the car wash water wand for the rinsing process. In addition to getting a more effective wash with the warm water, this also saves money in that you don't have to use the car wash water wand for the soapy washing process.
