Only observation I have is that I did quite a bit of trim on my '95 Aero recently, and one thing which did seem to help was to use a clear primer which promotes adhesion to plastic (adhesion enhancer.) Also, personally, I would go with flexible primer (over the adhesion enhancing layer); the panels do takes nudges from various objects, and do need to bend a bit. Using the plastic prep you mentioned (SEM 3835) would seem to be a good idea; my experience says that the better the surface preparation, the better-looking and more durable the results. Don't view it as overkill.
