Typically happens with wash abrasives, detergents, etc. Unit can be lifted but I've seen people try and do it with a screwdriver and pop off the badge and end up gouging the hood. Best to have it center drilled and taken off. Replacements are about $30.
I de-badged the hood of my car on purpose, infilled the badge indent, sanded and painted them over smooth to the hood line, and took off all chrome lettering (Goo Be Gone and rubbing compound followed by wax). My '01 9-5 is a DD to the office and is a bad a$$ all the way!
