Will do it.
Rubbing compound is not necessarily a bad thing, even on a clearcoat. What is, however, is improper preparation or trying to get a product to do to much.
Improper product will lead to physically rubbing harder, causing your applicator to actually scratch worse than intended. Something with more grit may seem counter productive; when, in fact, it will be easier to remove swirls caused by product and applicators.
The key to compounding by hand:
Use the lightest stuff first, then progressively use a heavier "cut". Then work your way back through the finer product, always finishing with a glaze product. Glaze contains very fine polish and filler for the scratches.
Use clean applicators. Wash in hot, soapy water being sure they are rinsed well. USE NO SOFTENERS OR SOFTENERS SHEETS when laundering any materials to be used on a car. Softeners leave an oil residue on your finish.
Above all else, polish / compound is not wax. Apply/rub until it begins to drag on the surface, then remove. These products should not dry on your finish.
