Thank you for the compliments. I appreciate them very much. :-)

To answer your questions:

(1) Clay - Do I feel its a must? Well, no. Like any detailing work its a bit of a judgment call. I do a close inspection of the car and test the paint by putting my hand in a plastic baggie and lightly rubbing the paint. This enhances the feel of any surface crud. If I feel roughness, I clay. Its one of those rare car detailing processes that's easy, quick, and very effective.

I'm not sure why Larry Reynolds and crew still have their beliefs. I'm sure many enthusiasts have questioned his views but he seems to stick to them. There are some aggressive overspray clays used by body shops that could marr the paint if used incorrectly, the detailing clays marketed to consumers are quite mild. And the use of a lubricant prevents any serious damage. I cannot think of a physical way a detailing clay, used with a lubricant, can abrade the paint. There's no physical contact between clay and paint because the lubricant acts as a barrier. Its no different than a motor oil acting as a barrier lube between piston rings and cylinder walls.

One of these days I'm gonna shoot a silly video about claying. I'm gonna take a brand new clay bar, remove it from the packaging, roll it in the dirt in my front yard, then go to my car and rub the dirt-covered clay on the paint with *no lubricant*. It'll prolly scratch the hell out of my paint, but no big deal. I'll then take my buffer and a mild polish and buff out the scratches in less than 60 seconds. An extreme example? Sure. The point is, no matter how bad the damage from claying, it can be easily fixed in no time. So why is Larry still worried? A true mystery.

(2) The best way to find a great detailer is via referrals, preferably from people who are as car crazy as you are. If they like someone, chances are you will too.

I can refer you to a guy I've heard of in Jersey. His name is Erich Lipinski and he's known to BMW enthusiasts in that area. I don't have contact info but I'll try to dig it up for you. I've seen pics of his work and read posts about his methods and he sounds like an awesome detailer.

If you're ever out on Long Island check out a place called Recondition USA. http://www.reconditionusa.com . Contact there is Bruce. I've heard real good things about their work. Finally, in the city (dunno where) there's a place called Technik Detail. Contact name is Gus Tsekenis. Sorry, I don't have a website or phone number.

See? My advice is true! Referrals from enthusiasts and detailers really works.
