I know this is an old thread, but the stickiness, at least on the 9-5, is definitely due to degradation. The buttons originally had a soft-touch finish on them. It's very nice when new, but if you've ever owned any product with that type of finish, you'll know that it starts to break down and gets sticky after a decade. Luckily the actual plastic the buttons are molded out of looks decent even without the soft-touch finish.
