You should protect the wheels now with a wax or sealant. Polymer sealants are tougher and withstand heat much better than carnauba waxes. My favorite sealant for wheels is Klasse All In One. It provides mild cleaning ability and hard acrylic protection. All In One is great for the rest of the car too.
Other popular sealant choices are Zaino, Duragloss, Blackfire, Platinum, and Meguiar's #20 sealant. All are available online and a few can be found in stores like NAPA.
If you want something cheap and easy to protect the wheels, NuFinish isn't too bad. You can certainly use whatever you've got now until you get new pads. Something protecting the wheels is better than nothing.
