There are only 2 big manufacturers of automotive clay, so most brands are re-packaged, color changed versions of one another. The exception seems to be Meguiars clay- most people find it too soft and "mushy." I use Clay Magic- big bar, locally available, and I'm not paying extra for the cleaner/wax thrown in to jack up the price by companies like Mothers (not trying to be judgmental, but do most people buying clay need an all in one cleaner/wax? I would think those of us nuts enough to clay have a shelf full of better, dedicated products already).

Some people use a 1:3 ratio of car wash soap and water instead of detailing spray- I have stuck to detailing spray because I've heard complaints that when using water the clay absorbs too much of it and gets too soft, and the manufacturers recommend detailing spray, and for $4/bottle at Pep Boys, I don't want to experiment where the risk is scratched paint. Also, when you get your bar, break it in half; use the first half until folding it no longer produces a totally clean surface, then throw it away (or save it for your wheels) and use the other half to finish the car.

Bottom line, as long as you use plenty of lube, and keep the clay relatively clean, you won't scratch your paint, and you won't believe how easily wax and polish can be applied and removed from a smooth car.
