Oil filter question

Okay, so I'm gonna confess to heresy here - I've been using Fram oil filters in my Saabs for years and years, ever since I read an article in Consumer Reports indicating that they removed small particles the best.
But recently I had a bad experience. I grabbed a filter that had been sitting on my shelf for a few months, opened it, and was unpleasantly surprised to find surface rust on the bottom (bottom = the part that mates to the engine), and some visible inside!
So I thought, okay, it's been sitting for several months in a humid climate (FL), I'll just go buy a new one. Went to the store, opened a couple boxes, and the filters at the store also had small amounts of rust (something I do NOT want in my motor).
So finally my question: has anyone else ever experienced this? If so, with what brands of filters? I'm thinking of switching to Saab or Mann, which appear to have a plating on the steel which should prevent that particular problem... hopefully?
