Everytime I'm confronted with a need to drop the rear seat for some extra load carrying capacity afforded by my "flimsy" hatchback, I am relieved that the engineers had the intestinal fortitude to build something that allows me to pick up whatever odd length or size item from the Home Building Supply, and not look like an idiot like some who drive sedans and can't fit diddly into them. And I have not once said "Geez, what I really want is more chassis rigidity in my life".
We own a NG900 3 door, 9k 5 door and a convertible (and a 93F, too). All "flimsy" by some accounts, but they suit our lifestyle just fine, at 32 mpg and not an SUV (Stupid, Useless Vehicle) anywhere to be found on the property, thank you very much.
If the Epsilon chassis affords the structural rigidity as a panacea to whatever engineering dilemma thought up by the marketing geniuses at work, then why is it this same platform is being built as a hatchback by Opel, Holden and now the Chevy Malibu MAXX, (a 5 door hatch)? SAAB never capitalized on their biggest assets, namely the utilty of the car, well before utility was envogue or chique.
