Well, all that BMW does is build high quality sports oriented vehicles and motorcycles, so there are no compromises to make, no low profit cars dragging down the bottom line. Its competitors build just about every type of vehicle.
Consider Mercedes... they build everything from heavy duty trucks to delivery vehicles to micro cars. All the other independent European competitors have been gobbled up (Saab is now part of GM, Volvo part of Ford, Alfa part of Fiat, etc.), so they are expected to design for a profit for the mother company, and the Japanese are making an attempt at the precision required to make sure every detail is perfect. But the Japanese also build everything... Nissan builds pickup trucks and economy cars in addition to the G35 type of car.
IMHO, by concentrating on one thing... performance, handling, and ride, BMW can dominate the competition. And it sells a LOT of very expensive cars with plenty of profit... so they can plow that profit back into the company and continue to thrive. I believe that BMW is now the #1 or #2 luxury car sold in America... they sell more BMW than Cadillacs or Lincolns!
I like the driving dynamics of my Saab 9-5's turbo engine, but a silky smooth, bulletproof inline 6 from BMW would be nice. However, I don't want to pay the high insurance costs, the high ownership costs, nor for premium gas at every fillup.
