Some Japanese cars fit your description, but these are cars aimed at the entry level market where the potential buyer wouldn't be able to handle (physically or financially) a higher powered car. Take Civics for example. Good enough car, lots of room for personalization, good entry level price- and on paper it looks good with 170hp or so in SIR format.
Real Japanese sports cars have plenty of low-end grunt. For example, the Supra I was talking about. You can't say a Turbo I6 with 230hp and 246lb-ft must be wound out to be useful. That's far from the case. Since '87, the Supra and Celica have gone their separate ways: While the Celica has become a FWD sport coupe aimed at the younger set, the Supra went on to be Toyota's flagship sportscar. It retained its RWD format, and went on to get something like 320hp and >250ft-lbs torque by the end of its run.
I'd expect the NG Supra to follow along in the footsteps (tire tracks?) of MK4 Supras.
Like Jason said, look at the STi's and Lancer's about to launch (literally) in North America. The G35 coupe and 350Z I'll grudgingly admit are OK cars too, but a 3.5L V6 doesn't really exite me.
