States taxes not all uniform.... A lease payment in California is something that is taxable as it is from a dealer/lender to a consumer without respect for other states.
There were some states that only taxed the difference between the new car and the trade on a purchase, but I thought that loophole had been eliminated by the uniform trade codes. Of course Oregon has no vehicle tax and a very moderate registration.
California registration fees have gone down 60% in the last couple of years and there's no $300 smog impact fee for non California emmissions cars.
I can't imagine what transpired in New Jersey with your old lease. Was the tax based on the cap cost or selling price to the lessor, or on the difference between the residual and the cap cost? Does the particular local where the lease payment gets mailed in NJ not have local sales tax?
