Greetings -

My 91 900s 3dr was involved in a crash a few weeks back. I was not at fault (rear ended), and State Farm (the guy who hit me's insurance) has taken full responsibility for the crash.

The car was totalled - over $8000 in damage (he hit me and pushed me into another car - got it from both ends). Now the oh-so-fun-task of fighting to recover the full value of my loss.

The car was in immaculate condition with 118k miles. The paint is glossy and there is NO rust as this car spent most of it's life in Colorado. Only the past 2 winters has this car seen salt - and no more than 10 days total at that. I'm very particular about the car (aren't we all with our Saabs?) and it was in great running condition. The only blemish is a small dent on the rear passenger's side of the roof. The previous owner drove the car into the garage with a bike on the roof. The dent is minor and could easily be filled in with body filler and repainted.

State Farm's original estimate for the value of my car: $3975

State Farm wants to whack me to the tune of $1000 (down from $1500 earlier this week) due to the "previous damage" on my vehicle. I contend that that's BS as that's saying that my car is depreciated by 25% due to minor dents.

Second is their contention that my car is worth $3975. Since they will only compare "apples to apples", I did an autotrader search and found only 2 3dr 5spds for sale in the US. Average asking price - $4844, average mileage - 145k (27k more than mine had).

I'm asking for $4800, less $300 (gotta give 'em something for the "prior damage"), plus tax and transfer fees to total $4872.50.

So - has anyone fought this fight before? Best tactics? My car is sitting (driveable) at a body shop to State Farm's tune of $40/day. I have not signed any release papers - not until I get the value matter resolved.

Anyone know how long I can let the car sit on their dime?

Thanks in advance!

-Chris
