Well, while my Aero was in the body shop, I had the opportunity to drive a few rental cars... here are my assessments--
1) '02 Buick Century, 3.1L V6 - handles much better than the Buicks I've driven in the past, with excellent brakes to boot! Very good highway fuel economy too (about 30 mpg). But handling rapidly deteriorates above 70 mph. One interesting feature this car has is a low tire pressure monitor, it senses this through the ABS sensors (speed variation I guess). Unfortunately it all adds up to a rather forgettable driving experience, and this car is slated to be discontinued next year.
2) '03 Jeep Liberty Sport, 3.7L V6 - WOW! This thing is seriously a lot of fun! It has just the right amount of power, unlike its competitors, the Land Rover Freelander, the Toyota RAV4, and Honda CRV. Its 4WD system lets you select RWD only, and you're rewarded with amazingly good, undiluted RWD steering feel. I drove this to Washington, DC in heavy rain, and it was perfectly stable at 80+ mph! And on the way back, this Jeep walked away from all the Pathfinders that challenged me on the Jersey Turnpike. Heh heh!
The Liberty is seriously underrated... it feels like it was designed by people who really care about the quality of their product. I'd buy this vehicle if I were in the market for a compact SUV.
3) '02 Ford Escort w/ "Zetec" 2.0L inline 4 - wow! What a piece of crap! They still make cars with rollup windows?! This car is seriously LOUD, UNREFINED, and UNDERPOWERED. The seats are AWFUL--you sit on low-quality foam padding covered with possibly the thinnest material I've ever seen on a car's seats--think SPANDEX. Feels like the entire car was produced by bean counters. I guess this vehicle is no longer based on a Mazda platform? My friend's '91 Escort was MUCH BETTER than this POS.
Ever since I got my SAAB back, I'm simply blown away by how nicely it drives!
