I don't know if this is a bad habit or not, but if it makes you feel any better I was doing exactly that this weekend. i wondered about it myself, but after 10 minutes or so of trying to get the pad in without the spring clips bent back i gave up and took the pliers to them - I would guess that is a fairly widespread approach.
