You're right about the stigma of AOL users. I participate in a group of webmasters and there is real serious concern growing about AOL's network set up. Currently, they have about half a dozen proxy servers from which all AOL users get to the web. For example, the TSN user stats count all AOL users as only six separate unique users even though their are hundreds, if not thousands. The problem with this is when one single AOL user is a hacker or abusive on the site. If you restrict their proxy server, you end up restricting everyone else on that proxy server too. What this means is that hackers are catching onto the fact that AOL is a great place for anonymous abuse of the web. Couple this with the fact that AOL doesn't care and won't even respond to serious reports of abuse = webmasters getting fed up with AOL altogether. Many webmasters in my group have gone so far as to provide step by step instructions for moving users off AOL and more and more often there are discussions about restricting posting access to sites to all AOL users as a matter of policy (and in order to help motivate them to leave AOL).

I think AOL is already in trouble. They are stuck with dial up access which people are shedding very quickly and their only other choice is marked up DSL. My mom, an AOL user, looked into that and found that not only was it more expensive than dealing directly with her phone company's DSL department. Her local phone company puts AOL DSL installations on the back burner, servicing their own direct customers with much more attention.

I'm not a big fan of AOL and if hackers do ever start to degrade the quality of TSN, I will not hesitate to restrict AOL to read-only access on TSN... Besides, the Internet experience is much better than the fake AOL Internet experience.
