I received my Masters from R.P.I. through their distance learning (R.S.V.P.) program, so I never actually set foot on campus until my youngest son started there in August of 2000.
He enjoys it very much - although he complains too. I think it is part of most campus experiences, especially when enrolled in a rigorous technical program.
All schools have their own good and bad points so don't be influenced too much by others. Sounds as if you picked R.P.I. because it felt to be the best fit for you. That is the right reason for choosing a college.
One good thing about R.P.I.'s aerospace program is internship opportunities. One of my son's best friends is enrolled in Aerospace, and even in these tough job times his friend has had a great internship placement each summer. Not true for the other fields of study - internships have pretty much dried up nation wide.
