and myself, have had the opposite experience: Maxtors going bad and WDs hanging in there. My best HD by far is my WD 120GB 8MB "special edition". It's one of the most popular HDs (the first IDE to have 8MB cache, with the rest following suit). This model is extremely popular amongst hardware fanatics, and during my trawling of many hardware forums, I haven't heard of a single one going bad, whereas almost everyone has had an IBM crash on them, says something about the reliability.

Also the best IDE drive you can buy at the moment is the Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM. Contrary to all other manufacturers lowering of their warranty to 1 year, this one has a warranty of 5 years. That would hardly be the case if they had a problem with reliability!

Among my friends, most of them have had IBMs going south, quite a bit have had Maxtors doing that, but none of them has had a WD or Seagate crash yet. I know it's just anecdotal evidence, but I find the number of sources to be pretty significant anyway.
