Saab has a long history with the turbo engine so we can bank on it being reliable. From most of my reading I have found that the 1.8 in the Audi is pretty bulletproof too. It is really a matter of how YOU take care of it rather than who makes the best engine. I have friends with 150K+ on their Saabs and others with the same on their Audis and Volvos. MD also makes a great turbo, but that is in a diesel engine so that is an entirely different animal.
To turbo charge a naturally aspirated engine you will be opening a can or worms! It can be done but in the end there is very little cost savings and you will often have an engine that was not designed to have a turbo putting out way more power than it is capable of without a serious rebuild.
From what I have seen I do like the 20th Anv. GTi a lot and may even consider it when I look for my next car (it is about 8-10K less than any Saab) and has great fit and finish.
It is all about how you take car of your car and what you like. now-a-days pretty much any European or Jap car is pretty bulletproof. It is just a matter of would you like to drive it.
Just my 2¢,
Chris.
And the WRX is a sick car but has WAY too much plastic for my liking. Too bad.
