would your friend's friend able to provide or obtain support for the machine ? If so, then by all means get the sweet deal on the computer.
Acer was a bigger name then than it is now. On the other hand, all computers are alike to me :-), unless you really push the thing or has something to compare with. I would suggest a P4 or Athlon based machine, a reasonable graphics card, some fast memory (at least 256K), and a fast disc drive would do whatever your friend wants to do.
Cheap doesn't mean it is not good. To give you an example, I bought an HP with P4 1.5GHz, Nvidia TNT card, 30G drive, two years ago for $1,000 and I added up to 1G of PC133 ram. Recently I bought an eMachine with Athlon 2400, 256K PC2100 ram, 80G disc for $500. You know what, the Athlon machine runs what I usually do faster than the P4 as far as I can tell, most likely with the faster memory and better disc drive. No, the machines are not for me, I still use a genuine Intel Overdrive at 200MHz :-) at home. The difference between the two machines are the software bundle, but if you or your friend has existing software, then by all means get a great deal from Acer.
